A case study conducted within the NUNAVIK NICKEL underground mining facilities demonstrated the potential of LATYS FOCUS as an effective solution for not only eliminating coverage gaps but also reaching challenging headings, resulting in a more efficient and reliable wireless infrastructure. In the NUNAVIK NICKEL underground mining facilities, maintaining reliable wireless connectivity is critical for supporting automated drilling equipment, real-time sensor monitoring, and operational communications. One of the most significant technical challenges encountered was ensuring consistent signal coverage for a forward-moving drill that advances into newly created horizontal branches. The mine’s layout includes sharp 90-degree tunnel turns and thick surrounding rock, both of which cause severe signal attenuation. In practice, this meant that once the drill moved out of the line-of-sight of the access point, real-time communication, telemetry, and remote control became impossible.
To address these challenges, LATYS FOCUS was deployed in the main corridor to enhance the existing Wi-Fi network. Leveraging its intelligent signal steering capability, LATYS FOCUS strengthened the wireless coverage along the corridor and successfully “bent” the signal around the 90-degree tunnel turn to reach the forward-moving drill.
